The Intergovernmental Committee for Economic and Labour Force Development, the Metcalf Foundation, and the Toronto Workforce Innovation Group invite you to a panel presentation: Sector-Based Workforce Development Strategies and Learnings on February 12, 2015 from 2:30 pm to 4:30pm at the 519 Church Street Community Centre Ballroom.
The session will stimulate new ideas and discussion for people interested in meeting employers needs for a skilled workforce and improving career advancement and economic mobility for lower-wage workers. It will discuss sector-based strategies in the U.S. that aim to create access to jobs and to career ladders for disadvantaged workers as well as efforts to work with businesses in low-wage sectors to improve job quality. Discussion will explore implications for Toronto and Ontario’s workforce development systems.
The presentation will include an in-depth analysis of Per Scholas, an organization that runs a leading national workforce development program, focused on IT industries, with centres in seven U.S. cities.
The panel will be moderated by noted workforce development expert Sheila Maguire. She will be joined by panelists Angie Kamath and David S. Berman two individuals closely involved over the past decade in New York City’s innovative workforce development strategies.
- Angie Kamath joined Per Scholas in 2013 as Executive Director of New York operations. Prior to joining Per Scholas, Ms. Kamath spent 7 years as Deputy Commissioner for Workforce1. During her tenure in the Bloomberg administration she implemented several successful initiatives focused on improving the income and advancement prospects for working poor.
- David S. Berman is the Director of Programs and Evaluation at the New York City Center for Economic Opportunity, in the Office of Mayor de Blasio. Mr. Berman oversees the unit that helps to design anti-poverty initiatives, and he works with an array of City agencies on program implementation and performance monitoring and evaluation with the goal of bringing effective strategies to scale.
This presentation will enrich our understanding of what constitutes effective workforce development systems, foster dialogue and stimulate ideas about how a variety of strategies can work together to improve the economic mobility and stability of Toronto’s working poor.
